AI cites sources based on brand mentions, quotable content and clear sourcing — not backlinks or schema. The verified data on how to get cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI.
AI search engines choose which sources to cite based mostly on how often a brand is mentioned across the web — not how many backlinks it has. In an Ahrefs study of 75,000 brands, web mentions correlated with AI Overview visibility at 0.664, versus just 0.218 for backlinks — roughly three times stronger. Citing sources, adding quotations, and including statistics also lift a page’s visibility in AI answers by 30–40%.
TL;DR: Getting cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews is driven by brand mentions, quotable content and clear sourcing — not the old SEO levers. Across 75,000 brands, mentions correlated ~3× more strongly with AI visibility than backlinks. Academic testing found citing sources, quotes and statistics each lift AI visibility 30–40%, while schema markup showed no meaningful citation uplift. UGC platforms like Reddit and YouTube dominate citations.
The signals that get a page cited in AI answers are different from the signals that rank it on Google. Three patterns show up consistently across the research.
Ahrefs analysed 75,000 brands and found web mentions correlated with AI Overview visibility at 0.664, versus 0.218 for backlinks — about three times stronger (Ahrefs, May 2025). The authors stress correlation isn’t proof of causation, but the gap is hard to ignore: AI models appear to weight how often and how widely an entity is talked about, not just who links to it.
The foundational academic paper on Generative Engine Optimisation tested specific tactics and found GEO techniques lifted a source’s visibility in AI answers by up to 40% (Aggarwal et al., KDD 2024). The three most effective — citing sources, adding quotations, and adding statistics — each delivered 30–40% relative improvement. Notably, keyword stuffing reduced visibility.
This surprises people. In an Ahrefs controlled test, adding schema markup produced no meaningful uplift in AI citations and slightly reduced AI Overview citations by 4.6% on already-cited pages (Ahrefs, 2026). Schema still helps Google understand your page — it just isn’t the AI-citation lever many assume.
AI answers lean heavily on user-generated content, social platforms and video. In Google AI Overviews, the most-cited domains are YouTube (20.9%), Reddit (19.6%) and Facebook (11.6%) (Ahrefs Brand Radar). Across all AI engines combined, Reddit ranks #1, followed by YouTube and LinkedIn, in an analysis of 30 million sources (Peec AI via Search Engine Land).
There’s a catch worth knowing: being cited doesn’t always mean being named. Semrush found 61.7% of AI citations don’t produce a brand mention — the “ghost citation” problem, where your link is used but your name never appears in the answer (Semrush, 2026).
If you’ve been told “just build backlinks and add schema” to win AI search, the data says that’s the wrong playbook. The pages that get cited are concise (the average AI Overview answer is just 119 words — Semrush), clearly sourced, and backed by a brand that gets talked about across the web.
This is the core of Generative Engine Optimisation, which works differently from traditional SEO. It’s also why so many businesses are invisible in ChatGPT despite ranking on Google. For the full dataset, see our AI search statistics for 2026 and our breakdown of how ChatGPT chooses which business to recommend.
ChatGPT weights sources by how often and how authoritatively an entity is mentioned across its training data and live web results, favouring well-corroborated brands and concise, quotable, clearly-sourced content. Brand mentions correlate with AI visibility about three times more strongly than backlinks.
Backlinks help indirectly — high-authority sites are more likely to appear in training data — but they’re a weaker signal than brand mentions. Ahrefs measured a 0.218 correlation for backlinks versus 0.664 for web mentions across 75,000 brands.
Not meaningfully, according to a controlled Ahrefs study. Adding schema produced roughly no change in AI citations and slightly reduced AI Overview citations on already-cited pages. It still helps search engines interpret your content, so it’s worth having — but it isn’t a reliable AI-citation lever.
User-generated and video platforms dominate. In Google AI Overviews, YouTube (20.9%), Reddit (19.6%) and Facebook (11.6%) are the most-cited domains. Across all AI engines combined, Reddit ranks first, followed by YouTube and LinkedIn.
Most businesses are optimised to rank on Google and invisible inside AI answers.
